One of the greatest feelings is sitting down with friends, fighting over the controller, playing against them, beating them, and then fighting over the controllers again. It was fun in the past being at home playing games, but there's a distant memory we gamers all have when there was a place full of better and more exciting games that only asked for a quarter or two to get started.

In the childhood of many Cocos developers born in the 80s and 90s, there is no game type and game hardware today like those found in the Arcade of their childhood. Not only with the shoot 'em ups of "Galaga" or "1942", the insane sports games like "NBA Jam" and "NFL Blitz", and the side-scrolling battles with TMNT, "X-Men", and "The Simpsons". It was nothing compared to the fighting games like "Mortal Kombat, "King of Fighters" and "Street Fighter 2" that gave us a whole childhood worth of memories in the arcades.

Many can remember the crowded arcade hall where players lined up to play the most popular games available, coins placed on the screen, and a new wave of kids learning about martial arts through video games compared to the Kung Fu movies of old. Even in China, The classic "Street Fighter 2" is seen as one of the most popular arcade games next to "King of Fighter 97" and "Metal Slug."

The creator of the Street Fighter franchise, Capcom, recently had a new game launch conference with Tencent This past month. Capcom shared that it cooperated with Tencent to build a new Street Fighter mobile game named "Street Fighter: Duel" based on the Cocos game engine. The news of the release attracted the attention of countless players around the world.

This original Street Fighter mobile game, developed using the Cocos engine, has its basis on a continuation of the classic game, adding new gameplay and new game design to give players a refreshing new feeling for the franchise. The smooth animation performance and amazing frame rate performance also confirmed how powerful the Cocos engine is on mobile platforms.

Recreating the essence and experience of classic Street Fighter games

During the production process of "Street Fighter: Duel," Tencent worked to strictly refer to the design ideas of the arcade games in the past. The team worked to mimic the elements of the classic Street Fighter to meet the demands of what Street Fighter fans expect.

"Street Fighter: Duel" restored the classic maps of the arcade games such as the Hong Kong night market, airport, indoor hot springs, and so on.

In terms of skill moves, "Street Fighter: Duel" tries its best to restore the movements of classic characters, and retains the charm of each combatant to the greatest extent. This includes the character's image, attacks, and expressions with some integration of new elements such as new modeling and poses. These well-known fighters are more expressive than ever.

Instant QTE combo gameplay, a new combat experience.

A different form of gameplay was created for "Street Fighter: Duel."  Fighters can perform real-time QTE with real-time continuous play so that players can also have an intense combat experience on their mobile phone without the button mashing.

Before the start of the match, players build a lineup based on the relationship between character characteristics and attributes. Pay attention to the character status and enemy status, and release skills such as ultimate skills, combo skills, and esoteric skills with QTE.

Enhancing the mobile experience

According to the rumors, to adapt to the mobile phone screen, the "Street Fighter: Duel" game production team worked hard to adjust the character models (head-to-body ratio) to 4.5. At the same time, they adjusted the color matching when the character model is fighting or not.

After this head-to-head comparison with the original game, the production team adjusted the action frames to improve transitions. The game highlights hit frames as much as possible so that the fighters can achieve the feeling of a "fist to flesh" attack.

Also, the R&D team has also developed a collision frame detection system, which can display the location of the target's impact very accurately, generating a burst point, allowing players to have intuitive hit feedback. So, for each impact point, developers configured the corresponding hit frame and shock screen effect.

Compared with the original arcade game, "Street Fighter: Duel" simplifies the skill release difficulty, significantly reducing the game's threshold to get started. Although a lot of complicated combo operations are reduced, the game still retains the essential super attacks.

We want to thank Capcom and Tencent for their work and for using Cocos for their engine. It's amazing to see this game and can't wait to play more of it in the coming weeks.
